Technology Lab

Today, technology is an ever-present part of life. It has drastically changed the way we interact with the world and each other. The digital age requires that we understand and use the power of technology to analyze, explore, and learn. Digital age skills are required to be an effective student in the classroom and citizen in the community and the digital world. Through computer class our students learn and grow in their technology skills and develop an understanding of being good digital citizens.

St. Mary's School is committed to using technology to prepare our students for their future. Our computer lab is equipped with computer stations running on windows software. Our students are provided various opportunities to develop important technological skills using computers, iPads, and Chromebooks. In the classroom, teachers use Elmos and interactive whiteboards to enhance learning. Technology helps us equip our young learners with 21st century skills including problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

St Mary's in the Digital Age

To meet the needs of this fast changing landscape, Saint Mary's School has 2 computer labs equipped with 40 total computers. Each class visits the computer labs 2-3 times per week. Additionally, we have 100 I-pads to serve our lower grades and subscribe to multiple software. Our curriculum includes grade appropriate lessons including learning basic and complex computer components, keyboarding, internet safety, and good digital citizenship.

Students are taught about compatibility, storage, and e-mail. Internet lessons focus on etiquette, safety, browsers and search engines, researching online, evaluating good and bad websites, and viruses- detection/prevention. Computer ethics are discussed; topics include integrity and confidentiality of data files, shareware, freeware, public domain, fair use and copyright regulations, and licensing. Further skills are developed in word processing, spreadsheet, database, computer graphic, and presentation programs, specifically Microsoft Office products; Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Whenever possibly computer learning is tied to assignments within the classroom. Thus, students learn about the computer, practice keyboarding, and reinforce classroom concepts while completing assignments in computer lab.
